Something To Cheer For
by Willie Murphy

In her purple pink hair you can't tell she's over thirty
She's fashionably sleazy and kinda dirty
Cocaine in her purse with a tear gas bomb
If she stays alive she'll be forever young

Standing in the boys room looking in the mirror
His clothes are full of labels; his mouth is in a sneer
So cool every night in the danceteria
Then later on home alone, why he feel inferior?

Trying to live their lives like a TV show
A twenty year version of a rock video
Nobody's asking what are we here for
All we really need is something to cheer for

Small town businessman convention in the city
On the street with the boys looking for some titty
You only live once got to have a few drinks
Back in his room by midnight with his face in the sink

She's never gonna realize her real life dreams
She's married to a man, married to a machine
Stuck in the suburbs without no hope
For her emotional life she's got to watch the soaps

Trying to live their lives like a TV show
An X-rated movie or a romance novello
No need of asking what are we here for
All we really need is something to cheer for

But something in your sleep
Deeper than a dream
In green fields
Earth and smoke
Time is peace
And two lovers on the hill hypnotize the moon

You're in the army now, man, you finally got your wish
Your high tech training -it all comes down to this
Got your finger on the button; you're waiting for a call
If the phone rings now you can say you've done it all
(He saw it on TV)

Trying to live your life like a TV show
A Ronald Regan movie in a missile silo

Every day we watch the news so conscientiously
It's nice to know it's happening to them not you and me
Take a yellow ribbon and tie it 'round a tree
It's for our leader
He's a star
He's the king of comedy

Life ain't nothin' but a TV show
Thirty minutes of news; everything you need to know
No need of asking what are we here for
All we really need is something to cheer for

Trying to live my life like a TV show
A rock and roll dreamer ala Marlon Brando
No need of asking what am I here for
All I really need is something to cheer for
