The number of roguelike game is large and still growing. In this chapter I have discussed in detail only those roguelike games, which are either very popular (like Angband or Nethack) or have great historical value (e.g. Rogue), so called major roguelike games. The following are also roguelike games:
Alphaman is a shareware roguelike game written by Jeff Olson. It is set on Earth's future, following a nuclear disaster. The player character takes the role of a mutated human who is struggling to save the planet from annihilation. There are many useful technological relics, e.g. high-tech weapons (laser pistol, flamethrower, various grenades) and other equipment (protective suits like the radiation suit, a microwave oven, which can be used to ripen berries, and a microcomputer).
The game is available for MSDOS only, requiring 640 kbytes of memory and color display.
Crossfire a graphical multi-user roguelike game, originally written by Frank Tore Johansen. It uses simple tile graphics and runs under X11/UNIX environment. Crossfire is freeware and the source code is available. The game happens in a fantasy world, similar to many other roguelike games. It has a large number of character classes and races to choose from, gods, several realms of maig, rather complex skill system, over 150 different monsters and more.
Larn was the first roguelike game to feature multiple dungeons with a sort of surface world (in this case, a town) to connect them. The town featured several shops to exchange items, schools to improve skills and a bank to store valuables. The dungeon had side-offices of bank. Larn featured a time limited quest.
Omega is freeware with free source code, so it is available for many platforms. Omega was the first roguelike game to feature large wilderness (area outside of city and dungeon). It also featured a guild system, friendly non-player characters (NPCs) and many more advanced features. Omega development was frozen for many years, but now new versions have been appearining.
A shareware roguelike game based on Norse myths. Character classes include alchemist, blacksmith, conjurer, sage, viking and woodsman. Ragnarok is shareware and it is only available for MSDOS and it required VGA display.
Rogue's Quest is a graphical roguelike game for MS Windows, written by Pearson Wung. It features a fully graphical user interface and editable dungeons. The current versions require 32-bit version of Windows ('95, '98 or NT), but an older version also works with Windows 3.1.
The UnReal World (UrW) is a graphical roguelike game for MSDOS / Windows(3.1/95/98) written by Sami Määränen and Erkka Lehmus. It based on Fenno-Ugrian mythos and a tempting idea what kind of place Finland would be in iron age (800-1200 A.D.) if Sweden would have not invaded Finland. The game features a fairly complicated skill-based system, intelligent creatures and fellow adventurers.
